0279 – What is a Professional Defensive Shooting Instructor?

/
Firearm sales are through the roof and many folks that are buying guns are doing so for defensive purposes. This coupled with the number of states that are making it easier to carry a firearm defensively leads to a boom in training and an increase in training companies. Any time an industry expands there can be some growing pains. Different folks become involved for different reasons, some good, some not so good. A new organization has begun to some together to try and provide some guidance to Professional Defensive Shooting Instructors and their customers on what should be expected in the industry. The organization, the Association of Defensive Shooting Instructors, developed the following code under the guidance of Rob Pincus, Grant Cunningham and Omari Broussard. Today I want to talk about the code and what it means to me.

0276 – Four Things to Take Away From the School Shooting in Chardon, Ohio

/
My heart goes out to those affected by yesterday's events in Chardon. Early this afternoon the third victim died despite the efforts of those involved. I have invested a good bit of time today to try and bring truthful and quality information to you regarding the incidents yesterday. Part of that time was invested in talking with folks who are connected to the situation to try and gather facts on the situation. My goal with today's show is to take some general lessons from school violence and discuss. Much of the information coming from the event are still pretty fuzzy so understand that unless I specifically note a connection with the shooting in Chardon I am speaking in general terms. If I encourage something to be done I am not doing so because I believe it wasn't done in Chardon.

0273 – Workout CCW

/
Why Should You Carry a Pistol when you Work Out? I can't really answer this question for you. Only you can understand what you should be prepared to deal with and why. What I can do is tell you some of the issues that you should look at that might help you to understand why it might be a good idea for you to carry.

0262 – An Interview with Rob Pincus of ICE Training et al

/
Rob Pincus has been a driving force in defensive shooting instruction for the past few years. His program Combat Focus Shooting is one of the most taught handgun systems around. Rob doesn't just focus on the shooting, He also closely examines combat and how what we do on the range will or will not apply to fighting, and is constantly examining instruction to find the most efficient way to deliver content to his varied audience. Whether you are an expert or a novice, a student or a teacher, Rob is someone you might want to pay attention to.

0260 – An Interview with Fate of Destinee

0251 – Make Note of AED Locations

/
I can't speak for anyone else and thier life experiences, but without a doubt I have used my life saving skills more often and with greater consequence than my life taking skills. Just like our tactical training, we need to make sure that our medical training is up to date. AED's are becoming more and more common every day and they are life saving tools. it is estimated that 50% of people that die from cardiac arrest could be saved with a speedy application of an AED. Check out today's show to find out about what you need to know.

0224 – When Life Gives You Lemons, Train!

/
Either life is full of problems, or life is full of opportunities depends on our outlook. What we make of those situations is also up to us. When I get a choice, I learn from my challenges so that the next set of challenges will be even easier to deal with than the last. The more experience, the simpler life gets. What do you do?

0223 – Less Training = Less Competence

/
When the chips are down, we need to be ready. The last thing we want to do in a violent encounter is to put more on our plate. Think for a moment about what is involved in dominating a violent encounter. You must recognize the situation for what it is, decide what you are going to do about it, do it, reevaluate and repeat. All of those steps take time and time is something you have very little of in violence. Don't add to the list. Train so that you are ready to dominate when life deals you a rotten hand. Train to avoid incompetence.

0209 – Double Plug Your Ears In Dynamic Firearms Training

/
One is none and two is one. It is an old military axiom and it makes a lot of sense. It is an ideal that I put into play in so many facets of my life. This past weekend in a training session, a session where I brought 5 airsoft guns, for me, 3 airsoft masks, for me, 4 extra gallons of water, for me, two extra pistols, for me, I forgot to double plug, and I paid for it.

0187 – Keep Your Teeth

/
I love what I do, even when it doesn't go perfectly. I do prefer to keep my teeth. I have no desire to gum my steak dinner! Wearing a mouth guard is a simple step we can take to make sure we protect ourselves when we train.
