When most folks thing about SHOT Show they thing about the gear. New guns, new accessories. Gear that is innovative and fun. The size and scope of SHOT Show is staggering. The number of vendors is overwhelming and although four days seems like a long time, there is no way to see it all. Yet we try.
0249 – Executive Ice Scraper Follow Up
I would love to tell you that I ALWAYS have my pistol with me. I do when I can, but like most people, there are times when I cannot have my guns. This week I did some traveling and just like most folks I wasn't allowed to carry my handgun onto the plane. That doesn't mean that I didn't have any tools that I could fight with if I needed to. That is where my Executive Ice Scraper comes into play.
0244 – Last Minute Christmas Shopping Cart Tactics
Here I am with something in both hands when it hits the fan. Because of how our bodies are wired even if I want to open my hand, drop my Angry Bird, and draw my pistol, I might find that to be a challenging prospect based on the grasp reflex that is often experienced in stressful situations. We can see this reaction in dash cam video where law enforcement engage in serious life or death conflicts while holding their citation book in their support hand. It is as if some one has bound the book to the hand. Imagine me, unable to break my grasp on a fluffy stuffed animal, unable to draw my pistol, beating off two dirtbags with a fluffy stuffed animal in each hand. A flailing, furry, mess for sure. Yeah, this is the kind of stuff that goes through my head.
0240 – Proper Maintenance of Life Saving Tools
It is really a pretty simple. Life saving tools have to work. Your seat belts must function every time you wreck your car. Smoke detectors, fire extinguishers, and sprinklers must work every time there is a fire. You should be getting the point. When your life is on the line you must have well maintained equipment. I have talked about some of the pass times I have pursued in my younger years. Among them were climbing and diving. Both pretty intense when it comes to life saving gear. You better bet that as a climber I took pretty good care of my harness, rope, carabiners and rack. Ignoring any signs of wear or damage could have deadly consequences in what would normally be a routine fall. Routine inspections and replacement of worn gear was a regular occurrence. The same was true with my diving gear. Being at 165' of 40' fresh water is no less dangerous that 165' off the deck. If gear fails the consequences are catastrophic. Maintenance takes place on an annual basis or at the first sign of any problems. Why would we treat our self-defense handgun any differently. We shouldn't.
0225 – Preparing for Cold Weather CCW
I really do like the cool weather of fall and winter. I know it doesn't come without its complications, but at the same time, I feel more able to mitigate those challenges than I do the challenges of hot weather. Today we are going to take a look at how we can more efficiently carry our self-defense tools in cold weather. The tips and tricks apply to all of the tools you might choose to carry, but we will focus on the handgun as our primary example. Enjoy the show, enjoy the season and have a great day!
0223 – Less Training = Less Competence
When the chips are down, we need to be ready. The last thing we want to do in a violent encounter is to put more on our plate. Think for a moment about what is involved in dominating a violent encounter. You must recognize the situation for what it is, decide what you are going to do about it, do it, reevaluate and repeat. All of those steps take time and time is something you have very little of in violence. Don't add to the list. Train so that you are ready to dominate when life deals you a rotten hand. Train to avoid incompetence.
0221 – An Interview With Dave Spaulding
I love to learn as much as I love to teach, probably even more. The great thing about learning is that each teacher you have has new lessons to teach you or new ways to learn the lessons you have seen before. Today we talk with Dave Spaulding and for most of you he will probably do a bit of both. Teaching some new and improving on what you already know. Grab some paper, prepare to rewind and re-listen. 0149 – Fine Tuning Your Carry System
Those of us that carry our guns need to be constantly vigilant to make sure our system of carry is working efficiently for us. We must make sure that we are effectively concealing, able to quickly draw our handgun, and have a system that is convenient and comfortable enough to wear every day. The best way to achieve these goals is to constantly look for ways that we can refine our carry system and make it better.
