4.3 Proper Firearm Storage

You must first complete 4.2 Storage vs. Staging before viewing this Lesson

There are times when we simply aren’t using a gun. Just like anything else, when something isn’t being used it should be put away. For guns, put away means that the gun should be stored.

When we store a gun, we want to be sure that:

  1. The gun is fully unloaded in both the magazine and the chamber.
  2. The gun is stored in a separate location from ammunition.
  3. The gun is secured from unauthorized users.

We can use either some kind of a locking container or a locking device to store our guns. In some situations, using both might be the right choice.

The tools we use to lock the stored guns don’t need to be fancy, quick ore easy to unlock because we will have advanced warning of the “need” to access our stored guns. Our hunting rifle should be stored when it’s not in use and we will have plenty of notice before we need to access our hunting rifle to go hunting.
