One of the advantages of being a Professional Defensive Firearms Instructor and the host of a popular podcast is that I get to spend time with some of the outstanding individuals in the industry. There are few that have been around as long and have such a strong expertise as Massad Ayoob. Mas is an expert when it comes to the legal aspects of self-defense and we talk with him about this topic among others. Enjoy!
Massad Ayoob MAG 20 Armed Citizen’s Rules of Engagement
In the years that I have been involved in self-defense training a trend that I have noticed is the people have a tendency to become complacent easily when it comes to protecting themselves and their loved ones. When people make the decision to carry a defensive handgun the tendency seems to be on the hardware itself. The gun. The gun is sexy. In many peoples mind, it is the answer to the problem of staying safe.
We can see this by simply looking at the average concealed carry holders daily carry gear. The latest and greatest gun in a trendy caliber, is carried in a holster that is one or two grades lower than the quality of the gun, which is attached to a belt that is one or two grades below that. The clothing which actually conceals the gun is a mere after thought.
What scares me even more is the training. Minimum State requirement is common with little regard to whether that training has any relevance to defense or not. Don’t get me wrong. I am not a fan of required training to either own or carry a gun. But, I firmly believe that if we are going to take firearms ownership and the safety of ourselves and our loved ones seriously, we must be responsible in our actions. Training is part of that. Many people never seek additional training. If there is any additional training, it is most often gun related, without consideration for unarmed skills, intermediate weapons, or the legal aspects of a lethal force encounter…
You can see where this is going.
I have to concede, that the gun may be part of the solution. But the fact is, that there are many answers that have to be looked at when we consider our own personal safety. Massad Ayoob’s MAG20 lecture course is part of that solution.
