0242 – Use Holiday Cards to Update Your Contacts

This time of year is full of fun.Visits with family and friends, travel, shopping, spirit, and Christmas Cards.  Holiday Cards are a great way to stay in touch with people that you don’t make contact with on a regular basis. Friends and family move away in both linear distance and station in life and distance of any kind can impede relationships to a degree. Yet the exchange of holiday cards can be a path to developing, maintaining, and even strengthening relationships. Today we are going to take a look at updating our contacts though our Christmas Cards.

Keeping Contacts Up To Date Is Important

Lets face it.  When you NEED to get a hold of someone, you NEED to get a hold of someone.  The situation might be as simple as a flat tire or a dead car battery, or as serious as a sick family member or a missing child.  In times of need, those individuals who have resources are more likely to influence their outcome.  Resources come in many shapes and sizes.  In a violent encounter we may draw on our training resources, our CCW, or our unarmed combative skills, but in all of the examples I gave above, car problems or a sick or missing family member communication might be vital to resolving the situation.  With our modern communication devices, there is no reason that you should not have all of the information you need right at your fingertips.  A mechanic or tow truck, no problem.  These resources can make dealing with automotive challenges a breeze.  Although dealing with a sick or missing family member is typically a much more severe issue, again communication can help.  Having poison control, the family doctor and emergency resources at your finger tips can mean the difference between life and death.  When your teenager isn’t where they are supposed to be, having their school number, work number and all of their friends numbers ready to use could make the difference between a sigh of relief and a long night of worrying or worse!

Keep resources close by keeping your contacts up to date.

Keeping Updated Contacts On Hand

Having our contacts up to date does us no good whatsoever if we cannot access those contacts.  Imagine you do something silly like try to drive through a flooded creek.  You make it out O.K. and the Emergency services personnel offer to call someone to pick you up.  That handy dandy smart phone you have has all the information you need, but it is soaking wet and worthless.  If you are like me, you don’t have your contacts committed to memory.  How are you going to call for a ride, a change of clothes, or a place to stay in an emergency if you don’t know the number to call.  You have to keep your contacts on hand!  There are several different ways that this can be handled to add redundancy to your data.

This probably goes without saying for most folks, but make sure your data is on a computer.  It is probably a given that it is as you probably used a computer to put the information on your mobile device.  If you are at home or work it goes without saying that it may be important to have your contacts on a computer so you can access your resources.  A lost phone doesn’t have to limit your contacts.  Have your info on your desktop.

If you ever leave your house, take everything with you on that mobile phone.  The OS for your phone makes it easy for you to take information from your contacts managing software of your computer and put it on your phone.  Figure out how to make the two work together.  It is almost 2012, get with the times!

Yup, the “cloud.”  If your phone and your computer are not accessible you can use any computer with an internet connection to access your data.

Export those contacts to a file that can be opened with any spreadsheet program, or better yet, convert the file to a pdf so that any computer can open it.  This gives you access with out your phone, your computer or an internet connection.

Paper and ink are some great technology.  They have been around since slightly before the floppy disk, and are pretty foolproof.  Put those contacts in a ziplock, and you are safe from just about everything other than a fire or paper shredder attack.  I carry a printed copy of my contacts that I update a couple of times a year.  One in each vehicle, one in my back pack, one in the fireproof safe.  One is none, two is one.

Make sure you have your contacts.  Redundant copies in redundant formats.

The Holidays is the Time To Update Your Contacts

A Reminder

Sometimes we need a little kick in the pants to get things done.  All those envelopes stacked up on the counter might be the perfect chance to kill two birds with one stone.  Get you contacts updated your your cards get to where they need to be, and maybe more importantly, so your contacts are up to date.

The Time

Right after Christmas is a great time to make sure you are up to date cause you may have a bit of extra time on your hands.  The week between Christmas and New Years tends to be a little bit lighter when it comes to most folks work load, just ask any wearing Brown.  This is a great time to sit down at the computer and get your contacts updated and ready to be used at the drop of a hat.  I mean how much college football can you watch?

An In

Christmas cards might provide an important in.  When you get that card from your college buddy that lives just outside of Chicago its a great time to drop an email and reconnect.  Let him know how cute his kids are and get his new cell number.  If you spend time traveling around Chi town that number could come in handy the next time the FAA grounds air travel and has you stuck in the windy city.

A Habit

If we invest in making sure your contacts are up to date each Christmas, pretty soon you will be making you contact updating a habit.  Every time you get new or updated information if you enter it into your data base, you will always be up to date.  This will make getting your holiday cards our a breeze which is a nice benefit.  Add to that the fact that the information may come in handy in a dire situation and you have a recipe for success.

Whenever you do it and however you get it accomplished, make sure you get your contacts in order.  It will make life more convenient, and maybe much more.
