0218 – 9-11 Series: How Can We Prevent Future Terror Attacks
The topic of terrorism and terror attacks is a volatile one.  There is no more of a terrible thought than being caught up in the middle of a terrorist action and as we know it is certainly possible to find yourself in that situation.  All you need to do is look at Oklahoma City, Columbine, Virginia Tech, The World Trade Centers, The Pentagon, Time Square, Ft. Hood.  It happened to those people and if could happen to them it could happen to you, but don’t let that get your undies all in a bunch.  Yes, the list of terror events wasn’t a complete list, and yes the events were serious, however, the likely hood that you will be directly involved in a terror plot is small.  Assume that 250,000 were directly effected by the above plots, considering there are 309,000,000 Americans, that puts your risk at about .08%.  8 out of every 10,000 people.  That is a number to think about  Considering that 1 in 3 people will be involved in a violent encounter in their life.  The good news is there is a lot we can do to reduce the odds of being involved in a terror plot even further and reduce our susceptibility to violent crime at the same time.

Understanding Terrorism
If we want to prevent something, we must understand it, otherwise our actions are simply silly shots in the dark. Â I don’t claim to be any kind of an expert on terrorism, however, it is a subject that I have studied in great detail. Â If we understand a few simple concepts it can go a long way to help us to curb further actions. Â So lets dive in.
The action itself isn’t the point, it is simply a tactic
- The point of the tactic is four fold
- Enact political change
- Force the people to create political pressure through their terror
- Prove to other political factions that they are willing to sacrifice to cause change
- Raise capital for further actions
- We can indirectly effect political change, #1 through our actions, #2. Â Terror is the tactic. Â If we aren’t terrified, #1 and #2 are nullified.
Multiple Coordinated Attacks
9/11, Mumbai, Columbine are all perfect examples of Multiple Coordinated Attacks.  And there are several reasons why Multiple Coordinated attacks are used.
- One is none, two is one….
- Diversion/overwhelm
- Terror
- raise the body count which increases the capital of terrorism, TERROR
Multiple Coordinated Attacks are tough to pull off
- More time
- More people
- More resources
- More coordination
- All these factors are reasons why they are favored and at the same time tough to pull off.
Lone Wolf
- Less time
- Less people
- Less resources
- Less coordination
- Less impact easier to pull off and trending
What Can We Do to Prevent Future Terror Attacks
The answer is both simple and complicated.
Simple:
Deny the terrorists the currency of terrorism, TERROR.
- Don’t bury your head in the sand
- Do continue to live your life in a confident and prepared fashion. Â AÂ threat on the subway doesn’t mean you stay home, get a bike.
Complex:
Deny the terrorists success which denies the shit bags of all 4 goals of terrorism.
When it comes to Multiple Coordinated attacks, we count on the intelligence community to detect the chatter surrounding these events and break them up before they even start. Â We must realize that they aren’t going to catch every thing. Â Popular quote among gov agencies, “We have to be right every time, they only have to be right once.”
Be Ready To Get Involved
- Get Training
- Develop your mindset
- Carry your gear
- Be aware
- Be willing to speak up
- Be willing to act
Let Them Know That You Are Ready
- Buy a gun
- Get a permit
- Get training
- Work to loosen CCW Laws to allow carry in more areas
Terrorists Cannot Afford Failure
When terrorists fail it erodes the four goals that they engaged in the terrorist acts for in the first place.
- Enact political change
- Force the people to create political pressure through their terror
- Prove to other political factions that they are willing to sacrifice to cause change
- Raise capital for further actions
Be the reason they fail or maybe even the reason they fail to act in the first place!
