0197 – Safety When You Go Topless or When the Windows are Down

[display_podcast]

It is interesting how much we might need to change our habits when we change the context of our existence.  You might have figured out from the show topics over the last few days that I might have taken a bit of a vacation last week.  Yup.  Spent some time in Florida with the family having fun in the sun.

The principles we use to keep ourselves safe never really change, but the application of those principles must.  I thought about this particularly when I spent some time tooling around in a convertible.

Me in a convertible is a bit humorous especially a convertible without snow tires.  The safety implications of being in an open topped vehicle are pretty major and that is what we are here to talk about today.  Don’t forget that just because you don’t have a convertible doesn’t mean you can’t apply some of the ideas I talk about here to driving with the windows down.

Here are just a few suggestions:

Keep your stuff safe:

  • Put the top up when you arrive
  • Use the trunk
  • Use the trunk while you drive
  • Belt your stuff in

Keep yourself safe:

  • Use your seat-belt
  • Consider keeping the top up
  • Protect your eyes

Thanks for these great tips, Paul! Also, this might be an obvious one, but if you’re driving through an area you’re not familiar with, keep the top on!

Also, just for personal safety, I always make sure to wear protective eye-wear when in my convertible. Especially with the top down going 60MPH on the freeway. You never know when a pebble, or a bug will pop you right in the eye! LOL

    Paul,

Thanks for this topic. Having both a convertible and a motorcycle these tips apply to both. There are safety considerations to be aware of on each mode of transportation.

Motorcycles have their own considerations. Always wear your PPE (helmet, eye protection (I wear my yellow shooters or Wiley X glasses), leathers or jacket, long pants, gloves and boots). Always keep your head on a swivel and remember that you’ll never win when going up against a cage (car) so if someone on a cell phone cuts you off, thank God they didn’t hit and and let it go – don’t try to retaliate. All you’ll do is make them panic and put yourself into more jeopardy.

Thanks for chiming in Rick. Your comments are why I need my audience. I didn’t even consider the fact that being on a bike motorcycle or not, is very similar to being in an open top! I bet more of my audience rides than drive convertibles! Thanks man!
